Essential Training for Fire Service Support Personnel
The Jones & Bartlett Learning Public Safety Group, in partnership with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), are pleased to present the first edition of Fundamentals of Firefighter Skills for Support Personnel. This groundbreaking resource meets and exceeds the job performance requirements (JPRs) in Chapter 5: Support Person (NFPA 1001) of NFPA 1010, Standard on Professional Qualifications for Firefighters, 2024 Edition.
Firefighter Support Training
Chapter 5: Support Person (NFPA 1001) in NFPA 1010 is a new chapter within the standard. A support person is defined as a fire department member who is not trained to the Firefighter I level but assists by performing duties in environments that are not hazardous. These duties can include assisting with communications, identifying hazardous environments, connecting a pumper to a water supply, opening and closing fire hydrants, operating emergency scene lighting, refilling SCBA air cylinders, and cleaning and checking equipment and tools.
As part of the NFPA standard consolidation initiative, multiple standards covering firefighters, fire apparatus drivers/operators, airport firefighters, and marine firefighting training have been combined into a single document.
NFPA Certification
NFPA 1010, Standard on Professional Qualifications for Firefighters, 2024 Edition, was issued by the NFPA Standards Council on December 21, 2023, with an effective date of January 10, 2024. NFPA 1010 represents a consolidation and revision of the following stand-alone standards:
- NFPA 1001, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 2019 Edition
- NFPA 1002, Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/ Operator Professional Qualifications, 2017 Edition
- NFPA 1003, Standard for Airport Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, 2019 Edition
- NFPA 1005, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Marine Fire Fighting for Land-Based Fire Fighters, 2019 Edition
